Healthy Liver Tips

A healthy liver is crucial for good health.

Despite its many functions, we hardly afford our livers the same attention that we shower on our hearts and lungs – or even our skin!

The liver is far more complex than you think. It is responsible for neutralising and disposing of toxins, supplying the body with energy stores, defending us from infection, as well as regulating cholesterol levels and vitamin and mineral supplies in the body.

Now that you know why your liver is important, here’s what you can do to keep it in tip-top shape.

• Eat healthy. An unhealthy diet can lead to malnutrition or obesity, two conditions that can impact the function of your liver. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will help keep your liver in good condition. Keep your home well-stocked with low-fat, high-fibre foods. Cut back on foods with high sugar or salt content.

• Drink less. Here’s one you already know: excessive alcohol consumption damages the liver. Drinking in moderation – no more than 1-2 drinks at a time and never on a daily basis – can reduce the strain you place on your liver.

• Be careful with drugs. Certain medications and supplements can harm the liver if not taken correctly. Always follow the dosing instructions and your doctor’s advice to avoid possible drug interactions or even an overdose.

• Practise safe sex. Hepatitis A, B and C are serious liver diseases, and can be transmitted in a number of ways, including unprotected sex. Getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and B offers the best protection from hepatitis A and B. Practising safe sex, eg, avoiding multiple sexual partners will help reduce your chances of contracting hepatitis B and C.

• Stay clean. Hepatitis A is mainly spread by lack of hygiene from infected food handlers. Always consume properly prepared food.

• Limit exposure to toxic chemicals. When you are exposed to paint fumes or household chemicals, your liver has to work hard to detoxify your body. Limiting or avoiding them altogether can lessen the toll on your liver.

• Exercise. Getting plenty of exercise can boost your overall health, which, of course, helps your liver stay strong!
