Health Tip of the Week

Social media: a tool for weight loss and cardiovascular health.


In a clinical trial presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2013, it was reported that people in social networks who received an intervention to tackle their weight problems together lost an average 6 ½ pounds more and shaved off 1 ¼ inches from their waistlines, compared with those who received standard individual care. Plus, their blood pressure dropped by 4 to 5 mmHg in systolic and diastolic measures—and the effects were sustained for over a year. The researchers say social networks and peer influences can be important tools in the fight against obesity.
