When it comes to keeping fit and healthy, housemate Toni is definitely up to the task.


There’s this sweet story about how Toni Gonzaga, host/singer/actress, lured (encouraged might be a better word) her director-boyfriend Paul Soriano back to the gym. Paul casually mentioned that his gym membership was about to expire and he was having second thoughts about renewing because he might not have time for working out. Since they have been exclusively dating for about three years now, Toni quickly decoded Paul’s statement. “Wala na raw siyang time. Ibig sabihin n’on, tinatamad na siyang mag-gym. Baka hindi na siya maging fit,” Toni spells out. “Niregaluhan ko siya ng gym membership last Christmas para ma-encourage siya na mag-gym lalo.”

‘Work’ Workout

For a time, she was also a frequent gym-goer. “As in every other day,” says Toni. “I got so addicted to it because it gives me a different adrenaline rush when I am in the gym and I see a lot of people working out. Parang it encourages you and inspires you to work harder because ang daming magaganda ang katawan, sa gym.”

We refer to going to the gym in the past tense because these days, due to her busy  schedule, she does not have time for it anymore—nor for swimming, for that matter. The most that she can manage are more than occasional runs on the treadmill at home. “When I run, I use some weights,” says Toni.

Besides, rushing off from the ABS CBN studios where she hosts a number of TV programs or the shoot of her new film where she co-stars with John Lloyd Cruz, is already much of a physical challenge. We haven’t even mentioned that the workaholic has a new CD, so she spent a considerable time promoting her album as well. “My work is my workout,” the busy star quips.

Junking Junk

In spite of a rigorous workout, Toni is able to be fit and healthy, much thanks to a healthy lifestyle. For one, she has decided to eliminate junk food from her diet. However, just like being one of the housemates in Pinoy Big Brother, this particular task is difficult for a self-confessed chichiria-lover like Toni. “I started doing it this year. Ginawa kong malinis [ang aking diet]. Once a week na lang siguro.”

No Party Gal

Other than the occasional salty potato chip or sweet-laden chocolate chip cookie (a snack that Toni suddenly had a craving for during the pictorial and which HealthToday’s editorial assistant had to look for in three stores around the Capitol Hills area), she completely adheres to a clean lifestyle.

When she does not have work, she is just at home bonding with her mom Pinty, dad Carlito, and sister Alex who is also a TV host. Or she is in her room, sleeping. She has never felt the urge to hit the bars or party with abandon. Her dynamic career more than compensates for the excitement she needs.

“Hindi naman ako abusado sa time ko,” she says. “We never go out. I don’t have a night life. My night life is my work. Kaya hindi masyadong bugbog na bugbog ang katawan ko.” “Kapag may trabaho, trabaho. Kapag walang trabaho, pahinga lang. Wala na kaming ibang pinupuntahan,” reiterates Toni.

Moreover, she does not smoke or drink. “I have no vice,” declares Toni. “Ever since talaga, because that’s one way of … protecting your health and your skin para naggo-glow.”

Positive Outlook

As a parting shot, Toni offers these words as the best health tip that she lives by: “Have a positive outlook and surround yourself with positive people who give you a positive aura. Love life. Love your friends and love your work. If you love life, feeling ko, it just transcends. Parang, lumalabas lang siya dahil masaya ka. “Feeling ko, sa sitwasyon naming mga artista, kapag grateful ka sa mga opportunities na dumarating sa iyo, hindi mahirap na ipakita na masaya ka and that you’re contented with your life.”
