Gretchen and the fountain of youth
Her controversial tirades have made her a regular subject of celebrity gossip, but it’s her ageless beauty that awes people into silence.
Nobody does it like Gretchen Barretto. She walks in a room, exuding confidence and–what she’s probably most famous for–eternal youth, and instantly causes uproar. She does just this for this photo shoot. She arrives wearing a black sleeveless top and leggings, her hair in a pony tail, her face devoid of makeup, with bodyguards and yayas in tow, of course. Her simple get-up manages to turn heads.
Healthy body, healthy mind
“What’s your secret to looking so young?” we ask. “I’ve been asked that question a lot of times. But I always say sleep. I really believe in a lot of sleep.”
But with her busy schedule, she says sleep has become a premium. Apart from a handful of endorsements, and television appearances, Gretchen is busy working on her huge comeback soap opera on ABS-CBN, Magkaribal, with Derek Ramsay and Bea Alonzo. She juggles her schedule to leave time for her family, friends, and other favorite activities.
“Now that I’m working, I don’t get enough sleep. I don’t sleep as much but the minute I get home from work, I make sure I sleep,” she says.
Gretchen is also a firm believer that physical beauty emanates from inner well-being. This, she believes, is crucial to looking young, fresh and radiant.
“It goes hand in hand talaga. You can’t just go to the derma and wish you’ll have great skin when you don’t have a healthy lifestyle. It’s really the healthy lifestyle,” she says.
She also reveals proudly, “(I drink) a lot of water. I don’t smoke, I seldom drink, like occasionally and not a lot.”
Plus, she adds, no drugs, no late nights hanging around in bars.
“Just exercise, I guess that’s it. If you have a healthy body, (you have a) healthy mind,” she says.
Of kamotes and chocolates
Gretchen used to be strict when it comes to food and tried to stick to organic products. Perhaps her best remembered health regimen is the kamote (sweet potato) diet. She ate it boiled, coupled with fruits. Gretchen swore to the effectiveness of her unique diet in interviews, she inspired a lot of other women to try her regimen.
Right now, however, Gretchen is trying to loosen up a bit. “I try to make do with what’s in front of me. But I still have organic chicken unless of course I crave for fried chicken from a restaurant, then that’s not organic.
But I’m pretty much careful with my food,” she says. “I’m not really into oily stuff. Not that I avoid it, but I’m really not fond of it,” she adds.
Unlike most people, Gretchen frowns at the sight of junk food but she does have her guilty pleasures. And we’re not talking about designer clothes or bags.
“Chocolates? Ah yeah that I am (a fan). But I won’t indulge. I just have a few pieces. But sometimes I do give in and eat unhealthy food,” she says.
And forget the endless reports of collagen and Botox injections and other enhancements.
Gretchen claims her milky skin is the product of a simple regimen she religiously follows.
“I go to the derma, I won’t deny that. But what I really do is I try not to have make-up on as much as possible,” she says.
“Because when you work, it’s there the whole time. The minute I get into my car, on my way home from work, I remove it already. If it’s a personal thing, like dinner party, I just put baby powder,” she says.
Then, of course, there’s her diet and her obviously healthy lifestyle.
“Healthy body talaga eh. When you have a healthy body, it just shows,” she says.
