Question:

I have been suffering from chest pain lately. How do I ensure that it is not a heart attack?

Ernesto Puso, Makati City

Answer:

Chest pain is a nonspecific symptom. The kind that signals a heart attack is a severe crushing, squeezing pain or pressure in the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes. It typically occurs in the middle or left side of the chest and may extend to the shoulder, arm, jaw, stomach and back. Other symptoms include sweating, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness and unexplained fatigue. If you suspect a heart attack, call the emergency hotline immediately. Any new chest pain should be evaluated by a physician.
